LTG Mary Legere – Mitigating the Effects of Disaster on Agency Data

LTG Mary Legere is the lead executive of the US intelligence army on industrial security and also the advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Security and Protection Policies.

In addition to natural disasters, federal agencies have to deal with the chronic risk of cyber-attacks and insider leaks. As the Snowden incident and Sony hack have demonstrated, 100 percent security cannot be guaranteed, especially where data storage sites are networked. The more recent Office of Personnel Management security breach has showed that a focused attack can inflict significant damage to the federal government. To keep user confidence high on the security of their data, federal agencies have to double up on their data safety measures and policies.

Develop and Execute

When weaknesses and vulnerabilities are identified, the agency has to work on ensuring the risk policies establish the best methods of dealing with such eventualities. Some of the best practices in mitigating disaster on stored data include using cloud solutions, disk to cloud solutions, and establishing back-up tapes for long-term data preservation and security. Using a combination of these can ensure that one incident does not entirely wipe out an agency’s confidential data.

Evaluate Progress

Even where policies are in place and security mechanisms established, an agency has to keep everyone accountable through proper oversight programs. Chain of control has to be established, and policies and procedures have to be followed on a day-to-day basis.

One Response to LTG Mary Legere – Mitigating the Effects of Disaster on Agency Data

  1. 1SG (R) George Guerrette says:

I knew General Legere (aka Brady) when she was a student at UNH in the early 80’s. She was an ROTC cadet and I was one of the instructors as well as the Operations NCO for the detachment. All the cadre were very confident that Mary would go far in her endeavors.
