Lt. Gen. Mary Legere – Global Operations

Lt. Gen. Mary Legere is a Three Star General in the United States Army. Since April 2012, she has been a Senior Intelligence Officer and a Principal Advisor on Intelligence and Security Policy, Programs and Operations for the Secretary of the Army and Chief of Staff. She is only the fourth woman in Army history to attain that rank.

“Now three and a half years into my tenure,” she says, “I oversee the global operations of the Army’s 58,000-person Intelligence Corps, the modernization of our intelligence systems, and the readiness of our formations across seven geographic theaters, including Afghanistan and Iraq, and an intelligence budget of over $4Billion.” In addition, she advises the Army Chief of Staff of the Army on Readiness, Operations and Modernization of the Intelligence Corps.

She also sponsored cross-cutting experiments in Big Data, Fusion and multi-discipline integration, providing solutions to guide the Army into the IC Cloud and into a Common Command Post Environment.

The Army’s IT infrastructure, like all large IT infrastructures, is made up of systems, software and application platforms, data assets, and numerous processes and practices. Transitioning this conventional infrastructure into a consolidated computing approach via cloud-based IT solutions and models presented many challenges.

“Cloud computing has demonstrated the potential to change the responsiveness of capabilities supporting the generating and operating Forces and unified action partner (UAP) operations across all joint operational phases,” Army analysts wrote in March 2015, in a report entitled Army Cloud Computing Strategy.

“The ability to connect to cloud capabilities assures that Army computing and communications resources, authoritative data sources, services and information are available, accessible and safeguarded, from the enterprise to the edge.”

Lt. Gen. Mary Legere is one of only nineteen women general officers in the Army. She began her Army career with a commission to ROTC at the University of New Hampshire.
